a summer of firsts . . .

By Lesle | September 11, 2008

My kids experienced some big firsts this summer. They rode a bike for the first time. They took swim lessons for the first time. They took a ride on an airplane for the first time. And, it seems, they are going to weather a hurricane for the first time.

Ike is coming, and he is huge.

He is so huge, there is no point going anywhere because the weather will be everywhere we would go. As I write this, Ike is expected to come ashore near where Alicia did 25 years ago. So we can expect some serious wind and water on the southeast side of town. I’m desperately hoping that our house doesn’t flood, but I can expect the streets to fill up.

Grandpa came in from Galveston early today, he will be staying at the house taking care of the animals, but he doesn’t want us to stay. He says he wants us to be safe, but I think really he just doesn’t want to get stuck in a house without electricity with three whiny kids. LOL

Also, after taking 14 hours to get to Dallas during the debacle that was the Rita evacuation, I just couldn’t see myself getting on the freeway for another trip to Dallas. Especially by myself with three kids. I’ve met a lot of people in the last couple of days who feel the exact same way. But it’s all good . . . with us off the freeway, those that live in Galveston County and on the bay have had free reign of the freeway. And while it’s still slow going for travelers . . . it’s nothing compared to three years ago.

Tomorrow morning the kids and I will be heading to a friend’s house in northwest Houston. I’m quite anxious, because, after all, I only have two arms to hold three kids . . . kinda cumbersome . . . but I’ll do my best to comfort them through the thick of it.

See yall on the flip side.  :knock on wood:
